Best Switch 2 Games for a Quiet Late Evening

Late in the evening, with the house quiet, I want a game that sounds good in headphones and doesn't get my heart going. These are the Nintendo Switch 2 games from my reviews that fit that hour best.

The list

The 4 best games for this, and why

  1. Dave the Diver

    E2C29.530 minSound 5/5Chill 5/5

A dive is the calmest ten minutes on the console, with floaty underwater music, and with headphones I'm in Dave's world at once. I stop after a dive or after a full cycle of two dives and a restaurant service, and it autosaves when I surface. The menus are small in handheld.

PLAY IT IFyou want something beautiful, funny and calming that keeps handing you new things.
SKIP IT IFyou want a game with no menus at all, or you'd hate a busy restaurant while you learn it.

  2. I am an Air Traffic Controller: Airport Hero Haneda

    E1C39.015 minSound 4.5/5Chill 5/5

The radio chatter is the star, with calm music behind it, and it's extremely relaxing even when a stage gets really busy. Handheld is where I play it most, and I can pause at any moment. I stop between stages, because nothing carries over.

PLAY IT IFyou love planes and airports, or you like quiet puzzle games where order beats chaos.
SKIP IT IFyou're not into planes, or you need variety, a story or flashy graphics.

  3. Palia

    E2C19.015 minSound 4.5/5Chill 5/5

Calming music and sounds that set the mood of the place, and nothing is urgent. A quick check-in costs nothing, and since everything syncs to the servers in real time, I can quit whenever I like. It needs a connection, and chat is painful on Switch.

PLAY IT IFyou want the definition of a cozy game, and you like kind company, building a home and gentle errands.
SKIP IT IFyou want to play offline, or you plan to chat a lot on the Switch keyboard.

  4. Road 96

    E1C19.030 minSound 4.5/5Chill 5/5

The retrowave songs set the mood, though they sometimes drown the dialogue. It's perfect from the sofa or from bed, and it stays easy even when the story gets heavy. It autosaves at story checkpoints, and I can quit any time unless the saving icon is showing in the top right.

PLAY IT IFyou like story games, road movies, 90s music, and choices that really count.
SKIP IT IFyou want gameplay depth, or you hate it when the music is louder than the dialogue.

What makes a game good for a quiet late evening

Late in the evening the house is quiet, and I don't want a game that wakes it up or wakes me up. Going back through the games I've reviewed, four things decide whether one fits the last hour of the day.

It sounds good in headphones. When it's quiet, the sound is half the game. I look for music and effects I want right next to my ears, and this list is where the sound is among the best I've played.

It stays calm, even when it gets busy. I don't want a game that raises my heart rate before bed. The games below are low on Effort and none of them is hectic or competitive.

It's easy to stop. I may get sleepy halfway through, and I don't want to be stuck in a long mission. Every review has a note on where a good stopping place is, and I stop there.

It works in handheld. Handheld means I can play from the sofa or from bed with the console in my hands, and the TV and its light stay off.

How I pick the games for this list

A game is on this page when handheld is one of the ways I like to play it, the sound and the chill vibe are both among the best I've rated, Effort is 2 or lower and the game isn't hectic or competitive (how I score explains the scales). The list is 4 games right now, best first, and it changes by itself when I review a game that fits. It's not the same as my best soundtracks list, because a great soundtrack in a hectic game doesn't make a quiet evening.

Setting up your Switch 2 for a quiet evening

A few settings make the last hour nicer.

  • Headphones. Wired ones go in the 3.5mm jack. Bluetooth headphones work on the Switch 2 as well.
  • Brightness. In handheld mode, Auto-Brightness is in the quick settings, which you open by holding the HOME button. It's a good one to leave on in a dim room.
  • Sleep mode. One press of the POWER button puts the console to sleep, and POWER or HOME wakes it. If you've set a console lock PIN, waking it asks for the PIN.
  • Where to stop. Most of these save by themselves, and each review says where a good stopping place is.

Things to know before you start

These are calm, and a few have a catch:

  • Dave the Diver has a restaurant that's only busy in the first hours, until you have staff. The text and menus are small in handheld.
  • Road 96 has some heavy themes, and the retrowave songs sometimes drown the dialogue.
  • Air Traffic Controller has stages of very different lengths. Early ones are short, but some of the long ones run one to two hours, and nothing carries over.
  • Palia is always online, so it needs a connection, and chat is painful on Switch.

Close calls: great sound, but they ask for more

These sound wonderful too, but they ask for more Effort or more of my head than a quiet late evening wants. Here's what I said about handheld in each one:

  • No Man's Sky: Very enjoyable, but the battery drains fast, so I plug in.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: Still lovely, and a shrine fits a short sitting.
  • Balatro: My way to play it, for five minutes or an hour.

Other kinds of evening

If I'm already in bed, there are the handheld games for bed. If the evening is a tired one, the easy games for when I'm tired cover that, and the best games to play after work page ranks the ten that suit a work night best.

Questions

What's the best Switch 2 game for a quiet late evening? Right now my top pick is Dave the Diver. It sounds great in headphones, it stays calm and it's easy to stop. On another night the right pick depends on how sleepy I am.

Do I need headphones? None of these require them, but they're what this list is about. Wired ones go in the 3.5mm jack and Bluetooth works too.

Can I play these without waking anyone? Headphones keep the sound in my ears, and handheld keeps the TV off. Each game is calm, but I'd still check the review for any loud or tense moments.

Which of these can I pause at any moment? Air Traffic Controller can be paused at any moment. Dave the Diver autosaves when I surface, Road 96 during the story, and Palia syncs to the servers in real time.

Why isn't Mario Kart here? The sound is wonderful, but it's a hectic game and not a quiet one, and shells can ruin my mood.

How often is this list updated? Whenever I publish a review or change a rating, the page is rebuilt. The date at the top shows when something last changed.

Grew up on the NES, Nintendo 64 and GameCube, with Ocarina of Time as a favorite. Plays after work and on weekends. Definitely not a pro. Plays on a retail Switch 2, mostly in handheld, and loves docked mode to make a game feel bigger. This list comes from my own review ratings, and it's not paid for. How I score.
