Singularity 6 has announced a Switch 2 Edition of Palia, and a new mode called Echo Expeditions that arrives at the same time. I've played Palia for more than 350 hours on Switch, so I've been waiting for this one.
What was announced: a free Switch 2 Edition this holiday season
The Switch 2 Edition of Palia is a free upgrade for a free-to-play game, due this holiday season, with December expected and no exact day yet. Singularity 6 promises better performance, richer visuals and new ways to play with Joy-Con 2 mouse controls. It was part of the September 2026 Nintendo Direct.
What changes on Switch 2: performance, looks and the mouse
Improved performance and upgraded visuals are the headline. Nobody has given frame rate or resolution numbers yet, so I'll hold my excitement to "a lot" and not "everything". The Joy-Con 2 mouse mode is the other new thing, and it should make menus, inventory and building quicker, because you point at what you want instead of pushing a stick around.
Echo Expeditions: a cosy dungeon for everyone
Echo Expeditions is a new, replayable dungeon-crawling mode, and it launches on all platforms on the same day, not only Switch 2. You clear levels, take on challenges and cleanse "Echo manifestations" to grow stronger, solo or with friends. Combat is light, there's no PvP and the rewards are shared. Best of all for me, it's optional.
We still don't know the group size, the exact rewards or how it fits with progress you already have.
Why I care about the graphics most
This is the part I'm most excited about. Palia is already a great game, but on Switch the picture is soft and a bit soapy, and I've always wished it looked closer to what you see on other platforms. The art style is lovely, so it deserves better. If this update lets the Switch catch up, even to some extent, it will make the whole game feel better to be in, without adding a single new thing to do. The dungeon is cool and exciting, but a sharper, smoother valley is the huge improvement I'm looking forward to.
Here is my wish list against what's announced. It's mine, not Singularity 6's.
| What I want | What's announced |
|---|---|
| A sharper, less soft picture | Upgraded visuals promised, no details yet |
| Smoother play, especially in busy areas | Improved performance promised, no numbers yet |
| Less menu fiddling | Joy-Con 2 mouse controls |
| Chat that isn't painful on a Switch | Nothing announced |
| Playing offline | Nothing announced, and it's an online game |
| An upgrade that costs nothing | Yes, it's free |
The mouse gets me closest to the chat problem, but pointing is not typing. If you've read my Palia review, you know the on-screen keyboard is my biggest complaint, and I don't see it being fixed here. I'd love to be wrong.
The no-fail test: will Echo Expeditions stay cosy?
I haven't tried Echo Expeditions, so I'm only judging the announcement. What I love about Palia is that nothing is urgent, nothing really fails, and there's no competition. "Optional" and "no PvP" are exactly the words I wanted to see. On day one I'll check whether losing a run costs you anything, and whether a tired Tuesday evening can still be fifteen minutes of fishing and gardening without feeling like I'm missing out.
My take: a great game about to look as good as it plays
I'm properly excited. Palia is the cosiest game I know, the community is the kindest I've met, and it's free. A free upgrade that makes it look and run better on the console I use is exactly what I wanted, and the new dungeon is a fun bonus, especially with friends. I'll update my review once I've tried the real thing.
