Dave the Diver x Subnautica 2: can a Leviathan fit into a cosy evening?

The last Dave the Diver DLC is a free Subnautica 2 crossover, coming to Switch 2. I'm excited, a little sad, and curious what a Leviathan does to a cosy evening.

Mintrocket has announced the last DLC for Dave the Diver, and it's a crossover with Subnautica 2. It's made together with Unknown Worlds, the studio behind Subnautica, it's coming to Switch 2, and it's free. I've been smiling about it since I read the news, and I'll admit there's a tiny lump in my throat too. More on that below.

What was announced: a free Subnautica 2 pack for early 2027

On 8 October 2026 Mintrocket revealed the Subnautica 2 Content Pack, with an announcement trailer. It's free, it's due in early 2027, and there's no exact date yet. It's the final big DLC for the game, and Mintrocket's studio director, Jaeho Hwang, said the team wanted it to feel special.

The official reveal trailer. Watch on YouTube.

What's in it: Proteus, a portal and a Leviathan

Dave and Bancho travel to Proteus, an ocean moon full of creatures and resources they've never seen. A visitor from the other side of a portal turns up at the Blue Hole, new recipes are waiting for the restaurant, and from time to time you run into the Leviathan, Subnautica 2's signature creature. Dave also bumps into a few surprises he would rather avoid, which sounds exactly like Dave.

The trailer teases some small biters and a huge, scary shape right at the end. I'm not going to guess what it is. Mintrocket also says it plays like the base game, and that's the sentence I like most.

The OTG forecast: what a Leviathan might do to a cosy evening

Subnautica is the game that taught a lot of us to be nervous of deep water. Dave the Diver is the game where the deep water is a pantry. Putting them together is a fun experiment, and since I judge every game by one question, will it give me space to chill?, here is my forecast. These are my guesses, not facts.

What I'm watching What we know My guess
Does it stay cosy? Plays like the base game Yes. The Leviathan will be an occasional visit, not a chase
Effort (how much you have to learn) New recipes and new creatures Slightly up, with more things to read and remember
Challenge (how hard it bites) Periodic Leviathan encounters Up a little, and Mintrocket knows how to keep it fair
Length Final big DLC, no number given I'd love another ten hours or more

I'll update this post, and my review, when I've played it.

Why I trust Mintrocket with this

Dave the Diver is one of my favourite games, and I'm past 325 hours. The In the Jungle DLC showed me what this studio can do: a whole new place, characters I fell for, and the feeling of playing a second game. The free Dredge and Godzilla DLCs were really cool too. So when Mintrocket says it wants the last one to be special, I believe them. I'd say it's very rare for a studio to sign off a game's DLC run with a free expansion, and that says a lot about them.

A little sad it's the end, but looking forward

I'm sad that this is the end of the road for Dave the Diver content. I've loved the work the team put into this game, from the art to the music to the way every update felt cared for. But I'm looking forward to the future. I'd love a Dave the Diver 2, and the Bancho the Chef prequel is already in development, so there's more to come from this world. I really can't wait to see what Mintrocket do next.

For now, I'm counting down to early 2027. If you want to know what I think of the game itself, my Dave the Diver review has the full story and my hours.

Grew up on the NES, Nintendo 64 and GameCube, with Ocarina of Time as a favourite. Plays after work and on weekends. Definitely not a pro. Plays on a retail Switch 2, mostly in handheld, and loves docked mode to make a game feel bigger. Blog posts mix news from official announcements with my own opinion, and I say which is which. How I work.
